Progesterone. The norm of the hormone in women, what to do with a reduced rate?

Latin progesterone means “for pregnancy.” This hormone in women is secreted by the adrenal glands, brain tissue and cells of the corpus luteum in the ovaries, and male tissue of the testes. Previously, progesterone was exclusively referred to as sex hormone. But modern research has discovered that it affects not only the reproductive system, but also the neurotransmitter system of the brain, the functioning of the immune system, and the metabolism of carbohydrates. A number of other functions in the body depend on progesterone. Since this hormone has a great responsibility, it is important that its indicators are normal. In this article I will give information about indicators of the progesterone norm in women and tell what to do if its level is lowered.

Progesterone and its non-sexual effects

Progesterone is able to increase the level of the hormone glucogone, respectively, an increase in blood sugar. It makes cells less sensitive to insulin. This may be the basis for insulin resistance, weight gain, which is especially noticeable in the abdomen. Thus, the body stores energy in case of pregnancy. If it does not occur, then the next menstrual cycle starts. During this period, the level of progesterone decreases, and estrogen rises. The latter, makes the cells sensitive to insulin.
If a woman begins to overeat at this time, then blood sugar increases markedly. Here we are talking not only about the deposition of fats, but also an increase in total cholesterol, the imbalance between HDL and LDL.
Progesterone – acts as an antioxidant. It protects mitochondria and stimulates metabolic processes in them. You could say he throws firewood into the stove.
It improves catabolism, which means that protein tissues in the body are used to nourish the body.
Lowers muscle strength.
Makes connective tissue weaker, as does the ligamentous apparatus of the body.
Progesterone during pregnancy and effects on the reproductive system

Progesterone plays an important role in pregnancy. But this does not mean that the hormone “rests” when you are not in position. It affects the reproductive system constantly.

Progesterone is the hormone that increases the ability of the uterus to implant a fertilized egg into itself. For this, the secretion of mucus is stimulated. The contractility decreases and the blood supply to the uterine tissues increases. If there is no pregnancy, then an excess of blood in the tissues of the endometrium leads to menstruation.
Another function of progesterone in this area is a decrease in immune control. If not for this hormone, then the woman’s body would not be able to accept the embryo, considering it as a “foreign” object. When there is no pregnancy, a decline in immunity can exacerbate thrush or the herpes virus.
During pregnancy, progesterone develops mammary glands, but inhibits the production of breast milk. Already in the last weeks of pregnancy and after the birth of the baby, the hormone level drops. After that, mother begins to actively develop milk from her mother, and she can begin to lactate.
As we already understood, during pregnancy, progesterone is at a high level. Thanks to this, the uterus is relaxed. But when the hormone becomes smaller by the end of the gestational period, then oxytocin rises. It is he who leads to training and labor pains.
Progesterone maintains estrogen balance. If there are many of them produced in 2 parts of the menstrual cycle, more than progesterone, then this can lead to endometrium, uterine fibroids, mastopathy, polyposis, etc.
A high level of progesterone prevents ovulation, and has a contraceptive effect. At the same time, the properties of cervical mucus change, and it becomes a thick consistency. For this reason, sperm are more difficult to pass. Additionally, the endometrium increases, and this prevents the embryo from gaining a foothold. These phenomena become the basis for contraceptive drugs (gestagens or COCs).
The norm of progesterone in women
So, you went through a progesterone test. I will give a table that shows the reference values, the norms of progesterone in women. You can save it to track when the level reaches a positive mark. From the table it becomes clear that the norms of progesterone in women change, depending on the phase.

If there is a deviation in the level of the hormone (any), then you need to contact an endocrinologist or gynecologist. Better yet, consult a gynecologist-endocrinologist. The information provided below is not a guide to action. An in-person meeting with a specialist is required, because all cases are individual.

Low progesterone
What signs may indicate low progesterone in women. Look at the picture and analyze if you notice these symptoms. If so, then you need to consult a specialist. This will solve the problem and avoid deterioration.

What to do with low progesterone?
We organize a balanced menu of the day. Proteins, fats and carbohydrates must be present in the diet, but of good quality.
