Thrush (candidiasis): symptoms, causes and treatment

Thrush (vaginal candidiasis) at least once faced most women. This fungal disease can cause genital discomfort. However, this infection does not always require treatment. What is “thrush”, how to determine its symptoms and whether treatment is needed – we understand the article.

Thrush and its symptoms
Vaginal candidiasis is a fungal disease that causes opportunistic flora. Its causative agent is a fungus of the genus Candida. It has many varieties, but most often in women it is Candida albicans.

Thrush is expressed by symptoms such as:

pruritus and genital itching;
discharge of different consistency is liquid, curdled, mainly white;
burning, redness and swelling of the genitals;
sour smell.
All these signs may not necessarily be at the same time in a woman. The presence of certain signs of candidiasis depends on its degree. Itching and burning occurs in 90% of cases with acute candidiasis.

However, you need to understand that similar symptoms can occur in the presence of other diseases of the genital organs. The main difference between vaginal candidiasis and other diseases of the genital organs, for example, bacterial vaginosis, acidic environment. With bacterial vaginosis, pH is alkaline. In any case, the best diagnosis of thrush is a gynecological smear on the flora.

Symptoms may differ from the phase of the menstrual cycle. So on some days a woman may notice an aggravation of unpleasant signs, and on others their complete extinction. This is due to the fact that at different phases of the cycle, due to a change in the hormonal background, the environment changes. Therefore, most often, itching and leucorrhoea appear before menstruation, and after it the symptoms sharply decrease. Itching can also occur more in the morning and evening.

Is treatment necessary?
In order to treat candidiasis, there must be complaints about it. Thrush requires treatment in cases where there is itching and white curdled discharge. Itching is so unbearable that the genitals swell and redden from constant combing. Such discomfort is, of course, an occasion to consult a doctor.

The fungus can live on the skin in the pre-ductal area and give a slight sour smell. But in such cases, it does not require treatment if there are no other symptoms.

Causes of Thrush
There are many pathogens of pathogenic flora. Very often, unpleasant symptoms occur in pregnant women. This is due to a change in the hormonal background, as well as the acid-base balance of the flora.

Often, a problem occurs after taking antibiotics and hormonal drugs that include estrogens. Even nutrition and lack of vitamins can trigger the growth of fungi of the genus Candida. It is impossible to exclude a direct hit of fungi during oral and anal sex.

Also, with the onset of symptoms of candidiasis and for its prevention, it is worth abandoning synthetic underwear. Lacy underwear, of course, is beautiful, but it can be harmful to the vaginal flora.

Immunodeficiencies, diabetes mellitus, bad habits such as smoking and alcohol, as well as mucosal injuries during gynecological manipulations during childbirth can also trigger the growth of pathogenic microflora.

Thrush and relapse treatment
Gynecologists strongly discourage the use of douching as a treatment. Conversely, the injection of fluids increases the susceptibility of flora to various infections and sexually transmitted diseases.

The only correct treatment for the symptoms and thrush disease itself is antifungal medication. They can be used both locally on the affected area itself – ointments and creams, and orally in the form of tablets. The most modern and common active substance that doctors prescribe is fluconazole. However, in order to choose the right drug and its dosage, you need to visit a doctor’s face-to-face consultation and pass the necessary smears. Self-medication of thrush is not recommended, since improper use of drugs can lead to relapse.

The doctor may prescribe a smear on the flora to identify fungi of the genus Candida, as well as sensitivity to the spectrum of antibiotics. Thanks to this analysis, a specialist will be able to choose the most effective means to combat the disease.

If relapses occur, the gynecologist can prescribe a course of taking antifungal drugs for half a year, depending on the case.

You should also find the cause of the disease in the body, review your diet, give up smoking, alcohol and provide yourself with the necessary amount of vitamins.
